| The dome of the rock is often referred as Omar Mosque but
it is neither a mosque nor war it build by ruler Omar. The dome was erected
in the 7th century a.c. by Abd el-Malik. The gorgeous outside of the octagone with its persian fayences was attached by ruler Suleiman in the 16th century. |
Also impressive is the large dome with a diameter of 26
meters. Since its redecoration from 1959 to 1964 the roof consinst of
gold plated alumina. In the middle of the dome one can see the holy rock. According to jewish an islamic believe this is the place where Abraham wanted to sacrifiy his son Isaak and where Mohammed ascended. |
