| We found the World Trade Center to be an excellent start
for a day tour including nearby Wall Street and the Financial District
the pulsing heart of economy. The 420 meters high towers of the World Trade Center are the highest building in New York. The 110 floor high building had been planned by the japanese architect Minuro Yamasaki and was opened on 04th April 1974 after 7 years of actual construction. The complex does not only consist of the spectecular towers but also of the stock market, the United States Customs building, a hotel, a museum a information center which all surround the wide Austin J. Tobin Plaza. If you can spare some time or when you are exhausted, just sit down at any place around and watch the business people rushing by, talking, having lunch or relaxing. Approx. 50000 people are working in the World Trade Center and in addition approx. 80000 people are visiting it. Each tower has got 104 lifts. The World Trade Center also has got its own postcode NY10048. If you are short of time don't go up the towers. We preferred the scenic overview from the Empire State Building. Nearby Wall Street starts just on the opposite side of tiny looking Trinity Church. Wall Street is a synonym for the New York financial district allthough the street is just the center of it. It was named after the wall which was once there to protect New Amsterdam from indians and the english men. In 1700 the street was build instead as the city rapidly enlarged. Today you can find countless banks and lawers in this street that hardly sees a ray of sunlight. Avoid Wall Street during lunch time (because it's too crowdy) and on sundays (because the area becomes so empty that it becomes scarry). At the corner of Wall Street and Broad Road you'll find the famous fort-like-looking J.P. Morgan Bank. |

| On the southern edge of Manhattan island just a few
steps away from Wall Street we reach Battery Park. At the shore you
have a breathtaking view over Liberty Island with the statue of liberty,
Ellis Island, Govenor Island, the docks and Verrazano Bridge. In the park you find the Castle Clinton Monument and the East Coast War Memorial to remember 4956 soldiers who died in second world war. Battery park is also the place where the ferries for Liberty and Ellies Island leave. The 93 meters high Statue of Liberty was erected 1811 on the founding walls of a former fort. The worldwide known symbol for the United States being a free and democratary country was a present of France to the United States 100th Birthday. But actually the statue was planned for the northern entry of the Suez canal. There are a lot of pictures available of the Statue of Liberty but have you ever seen a picture of it's back? Of course there are many more places to visit than the discribed ones but this was just to give you a short impression of why New York is worth a trip even when short of time. |
