Australia 1991

Emblem of Australia

For a lot of Europeans Australia, the fifth continent is a dream they never can make to come true. Speaking for myself, I made this dream come true in 1991. Up to now I wasn't able to but for sure there will be a repeating someday.
Australia is a land of contrast: from desert to rainforest, from the absolute empty space of the outback up to the metropolis of Sydney and from ancient aboriginal traditions to modern aussie lifestyle.

Of course Australia is much too large to experience the whole spectrum on one trip only. You have to decide before you go. Our choice lead us to the following stations:

Cairns A tropical pearl in Queensland. The nearby Great Barrier Reef is said to be a paradise, not only for divers. In hinterland tropical rainforest is tempting its visitors with sweet fruits and dangerous crocodiles. And for all those who are not yet satisfied the Athertonn Tablelands offer a refreshing change with roaring waterfalls, crystal clear lakes.

Sydney Over here more than 200 years ago the European history of Australia started. Nowadays however Sydney is rather an American city than an European one which offers one spectacular attraction next to the other. Yet the pulsing life in Sydney is just one step away from the deserted outback, just divided by the attractive Blue Mountains.
Koala at Featherdale Park near Sydney.
Canberra The artificial capitol of Australia is a symbol for the big differences in the country but also a perfect example for the way the aussies strike together and despite all quarrels show their unity. After never-ending discussions between Sydney and Melbourne, which city should have the honour of being capital, the city with the aboriginal name was found.

Melbourne There hardly is another city down under where the European past is more present than in Melbourne. It is the capitol of Australia's most densely populated state Victoria. But travelling through Victoria you quickly find out how relative statements of that kind are. Compared to most deserted places in Europe these are still crowded.
